When you look at getting a ferry to Montevideo (or Buenos Aires) there are two options. You can take the ferry to Colonia del Sacramento from Buenos Aires and then hop on a 2-hour bus (what many people do, as that's most of the time a bit cheaper) or you can take a ferry from Buenos right into the heart of Montevideo. (Or the other way around of course)

The normal boat takes about 5 hours, and the fast boat (actually the fastest ferry in the world!) takes about 3 hours.

Do not try to take this trip as a last-minute trip, checking in and checking out (+passport control) takes time and you have to be at the port in time. Also in Buenos Aires traffic near the port can be tricky. u003cstrongu003eDepart early!u003c/strongu003e

Popular Tourist Destinations

Both Montevideo and Buenos Aires are popular tourist destinations, with plenty of things to see and do in each city. You are crossing a country border though, so you do need a passport to cross the border.

If you book this trip at Directferries, you will notice that the Colonia Express connection is a combo ticket. (A crossing + a bus)

Here you can see that the Buquebus ferry is by far the fastest option but also a lot more expensive compared with the crossing + bus option.

The travel time from Montevideo to Buenos Aires is 3 to 5 hours, depending if you take the fast or normal-speed boat. Please arrive early at the port of departure and calculate extra time for check-in and boarding if necessary. Especially on this trip, this is very important.  How long in advance you need to be present is usually communicated on your ticket or on the website of the ferry operator you sail with.
