The western coast of Fire Island can be reached by car.  There are four fairly large parking areas from which you can access the beach.

As you head east, past the lighthouse, you will mainly encounter sandy roads. These are only accessible to permit holders, who are often residents and employees. So, for tourists staying on the island, taking the ferry is almost unavoidable.

There are quite a few ferries to Fire Island. To get a clear view of the departing ferries, we have included the routes on a map.
