Embrace the slow pace of the legendary Blue Zone by boarding a Blue Star Ferries ship out of Piraeus for the overnight crossing. As the largest operator in the region, they provide the essential vehicle and passenger lifeline to the island, dropping you in either Evdilos or Agios Kirykos. Bringing your own vehicle is highly recommended because the island’s mountain roads are incredibly steep and public transport is sparse. Once you finish exploring, you can easily catch a connecting vessel heading east to Samos or north to Chios.

The North Aegean Route: To Ikaria ferry map
Ikaria sits in the eastern Aegean Sea, located just west of Samos and south of Chios. The largest ferry operators in the region include Hellenic Seaways, Blue Star Ferries, and Dodekanisos Seaways. It is a vital stop for the Greek ferry network, seeing up to 65 sailings a week during the summer peak to handle the steady flow of island hoppers.
- From Athens: Ferries leave from Piraeus and take about 7 to 9 hours to reach the island. These are big, steady ships that handle the open sea very well.
- The Samos Shortcut: If you fly into Samos, you can take a fast boat directly to Ikaria. The trip across the narrow strait takes only 1 hour and 20 minutes.
- Pricing (2026): A standard deck ticket from Athens costs around €45 to €55. If you book a bed in a shared cabin for the long ride, expect to pay around €75.
Ikaria is long and mountainous, and it has two main ports on opposite sides. Agios Kirikos is in the south and Evdilos is in the north. The winding mountain roads take a very long time to drive. Always book the ferry that arrives at the port closest to your accommodation.
