How to choose a ferry route in Spain

The best Spanish ferry port depends on your destination, where you are driving from and whether you want a short crossing or an overnight journey. The map shows the individual routes, while this overview explains the main travel corridors.

Barcelona, Valencia or Dénia for the Balearic Islands?

Barcelona offers the broadest mainland network and is usually the first port to check when driving from northern Spain, France or elsewhere in central and northern Europe. Ferries connect Barcelona with Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, with some sailings also serving Formentera.

Valencia is well positioned for travelers coming from Madrid, central Spain or the eastern coast. Its main connections serve Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. It can reduce the drive compared with Barcelona without requiring you to continue as far south as Dénia.

Dénia is the most direct mainland gateway for Ibiza and Formentera and also has connections with Mallorca. It is often geographically attractive for travelers already staying on the Costa Blanca, although the narrower route choice means that Barcelona or Valencia may offer a better departure time.

Cádiz or Huelva for the Canary Islands?

Ferries from mainland Spain to the Canary Islands are long-distance services rather than normal island-hopping routes. They are particularly useful when bringing a car, camper, motorcycle, pet or a large amount of luggage.

Huelva connects directly with Gran Canaria and Tenerife through a triangular route linking the two main Canary Island hubs with mainland Spain. Cádiz serves several islands, including Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, with the exact itinerary and intermediate calls depending on the sailing.

Start with your destination island rather than the nearest Spanish port. Cádiz can be the more logical choice for Lanzarote and some eastern islands, while Huelva is often more direct for Gran Canaria or Tenerife. From there, you can continue through the inter-island network.

Ferries from Spain to Morocco and North Africa

Algeciras is the main gateway across the Strait of Gibraltar. It has frequent vehicle ferries to Tangier Med and Ceuta. Tangier Med is outside central Tangier but works well for road travel through Morocco. Ceuta is a Spanish city, so travelers continuing into Morocco cross the land border after leaving the ferry.

Tarifa can be useful for ferries to Tangier Ville when that route operates on your travel date. Arriving near central Tangier may be convenient for foot passengers, but Algeciras normally provides more flexibility for vehicles and onward road trips.

Farther east, Almería and Motril connect with ports such as Nador and Al Hoceima. Málaga and Almería also serve Melilla, while routes to Algeria can depart from ports including Barcelona, Valencia and Almería.

Check the exact arrival port carefully. Tangier Ville and Tangier Med are not interchangeable, and Nador, Al Hoceima, Oran and Algiers lead into very different parts of North Africa.

Ferries between Spain and Italy

Barcelona is Spain’s main ferry gateway to Italy. Long-distance routes connect the city with mainland Italian ports and Sardinia. These overnight sailings can be useful when traveling with a vehicle, particularly when they replace a long drive through southern France.

Compare the full journey, including the drive to Barcelona, check-in, cabin costs and the distance from the Italian arrival port to your final destination. The ferry is not always faster, but it can replace both driving hours and a hotel night.

Ferries between the United Kingdom and northern Spain

Direct ferries from the United Kingdom arrive at Santander and Bilbao on Spain’s northern Atlantic coast. These routes are especially useful for road trips through northern Spain, the Picos de Europa, the Basque Country, Portugal or central Spain.

There is no direct UK ferry to Barcelona, the Balearic Islands or Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Travelers heading there must continue by road from northern Spain or travel through France first.

Taking a car, camper or motorcycle

• Check the vessel type: most large conventional ferries carry vehicles, but some fast or regional passenger services do not.
• Enter the complete dimensions: include roof boxes, bicycle racks, trailers and anything attached to a camper.
• Reserve early for summer: vehicle deck space and cabins can sell out before ordinary passenger seats.
• Pack a separate bag: access to the vehicle deck is normally restricted during the crossing.
• Check rental conditions: some rental companies restrict taking their vehicles to an island or another country.
• Compare arrival ports: the cheapest ferry can create a much longer drive after disembarkation.

Day ferry or overnight crossing?

Shorter routes across the Strait of Gibraltar and between nearby Balearic islands can work as straightforward daytime crossings. Longer routes to Italy, the Canary Islands, northern Spain and some North African destinations are more likely to involve an evening or overnight sailing.

For a long crossing, compare a cabin with the cost and fatigue of driving or booking accommodation on land. A ferry that appears slower may still produce the more comfortable or practical complete journey.
