The shortest crossing to Elba is the crossing Piombino-Cavo. Two shipping companies operate this route. Those are Moby Lines and Toremar. Moby Lines sails in 30 minutes to Cavo and Toremar in just 15 minutes.
Ferry to Cavo and Piombino
Cavo is located on the most northeastern part of Elba. As a result, the distance covered by the ferry is only about 13 km. The fast ships of the shipping company Toremar allow you to make the crossing in 15 minutes. However, this is only possible as a foot passenger.
Are you with a car/camper/scooter? Then you can choose the boats from Moby (30 minutes) or the slower boat from Toremar (40 minutes).

Altrenative crossings
If you have booked an accommodation on the east coast of the island, it is useful to consider the ferry to Portoferraio or from Piombino to Rio Marina.
If your destination is elsewhere on the island, the ferry to portoferraio is often the better choice. The other places on the island are often easier to reach from this (capital) city. That's because of a ridge that runs across the eastern part of the island. It takes a while to get over it by car.
