Three different ferry services operate to the popular Waiheke, the third most populated island of New Zealand. During holiday periods, the island becomes pleasantly busy with tourists, most of whom arrive by ferry. The faster passenger ferries dock at Matiatia, on the western side of the island. The ferry that carries not only passengers but also vehicles and freight arrives at Kennedy Point.
Waiheke ferry routes map
We have placed the different routes in an interactive map so you can easily see where the ferries sail and with which company you can book them.
Auckland to Matiatia
The passenger ferries operated by Fullers360 and Island Direct usually depart from the Downtown Auckland Ferry Terminal and arrive at Matiatia Wharf. From there, island buses, taxis, and shuttles connect to Waiheke. The crossing typically takes 35 to 45 minutes.
Tickets are not cheap, especially during peak periods. It can therefore be worthwhile to book return tickets or combo deals, for example including bus passes or wine tours. This way you often save money and have direct access to transport or activities on the island.
Auckland to Kennedy Point
The SeaLink ferry docks at Kennedy Point, which is slightly less central but convenient if you are bringing your own vehicle.Do keep the weather in mind
The Hauraki Gulf can get quite windy, which may be uncomfortable if you are prone to seasickness. In extreme conditions, sailings may be delayed or even cancelled.
