Bimini is located just about 50 miles off the coast of Miami, making it an ideal destination for either a day trip or a longer getaway for those staying in South Florida. Balearia Caribbean operates the ferry service on fast catamaran ferries that take only about 2 hours to cross. Many travelers book the ferry as a day excursion, while others stay at one of Bimini’s beautiful resorts for a few days of island relaxation.
On this page you’ll find details about the fast ferry to Bimini, where to book day trips, and how to travel between North and South Bimini. You’ll also get useful tips to keep in mind when taking the ferry.
Miami-Bimini ferry route map
The map below shows the ferry route from Miami to Bimini, highlighting the short distance between Florida and the Bahamas.
The crossing on the high speed ferry

Balearia Caribbean operates two ferries from Miami to the Bahamas. One route goes to Freeport on Grand Bahama, and the other to North Bimini. Most hotels are located on North Bimini, so when you arrive you can immediately enjoy beautiful sandy beaches and charming local bars and restaurants.
South Bimini is quieter, home to the town of Buccaneer and the airport, which you can reach by water taxi.
The crossing is made on a fast catamaran, the Jaume II. Built in Australia in 1996, the vessel is well known for its speed. On board you’ll find a coffee corner, bar, and duty free shop. While not especially luxurious, the Jaume II is reliable and practical for this short trip.

Traveling Between North and South Bimini

Seasickness on this route
On larger ferries, seasickness is uncommon. However, during rainy or stormy seasons you may encounter rough seas and high waves. Since the trip is short, most travelers manage just fine. Still, check out our seasickness guide for tips to make your journey more comfortable.
