British Virgin Islands ferry routes
Most ferry routes in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) operate between Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. West End and Road Town (Both on Tortola) serve as the main ferry hubs. Some routes include a stop at Virgin Gorda before continuing to Anegada.
Ferry services within the BVI can be irregular and somewhat confusing. It may take some effort to find the right departure time and operator. Hopefully, our route map helps you get started. Still can't figure it out? In many cases, private charters are available as an alternative.
It's also possible to travel between the BVI and the US Virgin Islands by ferry. Do keep in mind: you'll need to go through customs, check in early, and bring valid travel documents.

BVI Crossings
Ferries between Tortola and Virgin Gorda
Tortola is the central hub of the British Virgin Islands, home to the capital Road Town, the main ferry terminals, and a wide range of shops and services. Tortola is connected by bridge to Beef Island, where the main airport (EIS) is located. Virgin Gorda, by contrast, is more laid-back and scenic, best known for The Baths and its quiet beaches. Frequent ferry services connect the two islands in about 30 minutes, making it easy to explore both.
Ferries to Jost van Dyke
Jost Van Dyke is known for its beach bars, laid-back vibe, and iconic spots like White Bay and Foxyโs. Regular ferries depart from West End, Tortola, with a crossing time of about 20โ25 minutes. Itโs a perfect destination for a relaxing day trip.
Ferries to Anegada
Unlike the other mountainous islands, Anegada is flat and surrounded by coral reefs. Itโs more remote and less frequently visited, but ferries run several times a week from Road Town, often with a stop at Virgin Gorda. The trip takes about 75โ90 minutes.
Transfers to Norman Island
While thereโs no official public ferry, small boats and water shuttles do run from Tortola to Pirates Bight on Norman Island (mainly for lunch, drinks, or snorkeling trips). The crossing takes about 20โ30 minutes.
Crossings between BVI ๐ป๐ฌ andย USVI ๐ป๐ฎย
International ferry services connect Tortola and Virgin Gorda with St. Thomas and St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Most routes depart from Road Town or West End.
Many of these services include a stop in Cruz Bay, St. John, before continuing to Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook on St. Thomas. Passports are required, and travelers should allow extra time for customs and check-in.
Things to keep in mind when traveling by ferry in the BVI
Ferry schedules in the BVI can vary depending on weather, demand, and the operator. Itโs smart to book in advance, arrive early for check-in, and always reconfirm departure times (especially for routes to Anegada or international connections to the USVI). Some services may have luggage limits, and not all ferries offer onboard amenities. Also, be aware of additional fees or port taxes that may not be included in the ticket price; these are usually noted on the ferry operatorโs website or paid at check-in.
