Map of Ferries to Dry Tortugas
Reaching this remote national park in the Gulf of Mexico requires a nearly 70-mile boat trip from Key West, operated exclusively by the Yankee Freedom III. As the only public passenger vessel authorized by the National Park Service in this corner of Florida, it serves as a critical lifeline for day-trippers and campers heading to Fort Jefferson.

Route guide: Logistics for the ferry to Dry Tortugas
Located 70 miles west of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most inaccessible parks in the US system. Because the island (Garden Key) has no airstrip for commercial jets and no land bridge, 100% of visitors arrive by sea or small seaplane. The official concessionaire, Yankee Freedom III, acts as the primary bottleneck for the 60,000 annual visitors.
| Transit Option | Time & Cost | Logistics Score |
|---|---|---|
| Yankee Freedom III (Ferry) | 2.5 Hours ~$220 USD |
High Value: The only affordable way to reach the fort. Ticket includes breakfast, lunch, and snorkel gear. Strict 7:00 AM check-in. |
| Key West Seaplane | 40 Minutes ~$450+ USD |
Speed/Scenic: Offers half-day trips, avoiding the full-day commitment of the ferry. Flying low (500ft) offers incredible shark/turtle spotting opportunities. |
| Private Vessel | Varies Permit Required |
Strict Regs: You must file a boat permit with the NPS at Garden Key. There is no fuel, water, or ice available on the island. |
This is not a “book next week” destination. Ferry tickets frequently sell out 3 to 6 months in advance. If you want to camp (one of only 10 sites), you must book up to 12 months out. If you are in Key West without a ticket, your only hope is the “Standby List” which forms physically at the ferry terminal at 6:30 AM sharp.
Survival logistics & rough seas
- Total Isolation: As noted by the National Park Service, there is zero commerce on the island. No gift shop with snacks, no vending machines, and no public water taps (except for a small fountain at the dock). If you miss the ferry lunch window… Good luck!
- Camping Gear Limits: If you are lucky enough to snag a camping permit, you are limited to 60lbs of gear (excluding water). You must bring all fresh water you need for your stay (recommended 1 gallon per person/day).
- Drone Ban: Unlike some coastal areas in Florida, the entire park is a strict No Drone Zone. Rangers will confiscate equipment if flown from the fort or the ferry.
