Accessing Mackinac Island is a high-frequency operation from the mainland, but as a car-free destination, the logistics center entirely on passenger and bicycle transport.

• Ferries depart from both Mackinaw City (Lower Peninsula) and St. Ignace (Upper Peninsula) via Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry and Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry; while rides are frequent, you should arrive 45 minutes early during the 2026 summer peak to manage luggage tagging and vehicle parking.
• Since no personal vehicles are permitted on the island, you must choose between day-use parking lots or long-term secured lots on the mainland; most ferry operators provide a free shuttle service between their off-site parking areas and the dock.
• Luggage is handled via a specialized tagging system where bags are moved from your car to a shipboard cart and delivered directly to major island hotels; if staying at a smaller guesthouse, you will likely need to coordinate a horse-drawn taxi or a dock porter for the final leg of the trip.
• Bicycles require a separate transport fee and a specific tag; if you are bringing your own bike, it must be loaded into designated racks on the ferry, but note that many visitors find it more efficient to rent on-island to avoid the transport surcharge.
• The 20-minute crossing is weather-dependent; while the high-speed hydro-jets are stable, the open-air top decks are significantly colder than the mainland, so keep a layer accessible even in July.
