Ferries to Ischia
Cross the Gulf of Naples in just an hour by catching an Alilauro or Caremar hydrofoil straight out of the busy Beverello port. Handling over three million passengers a year, these operators provide rapid, frequent access to the island’s thermal baths and volcanic beaches. You can easily bounce around the bay from here, catching quick water taxis to Procida or sailing across the water to Capri. Non-residents face strict vehicle bans during the summer months, so leave your rental car on the mainland and rely on the excellent local bus system instead.

The Naples Escape: Ferry map to Ischia
Ischia is a large volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples, sitting just off the coast of Southern Italy. The largest ferry operators in the region include Caremar, Medmar, Alilauro, and SNAV. Because it is a favorite local getaway, the island handles over 4 million passengers a year.
Here are 4 tips for getting to Ischia by ferry:
- 1. Know your Naples port: Fast boats leave from Molo Beverello. Slow boats with cars leave from Porta di Massa. They are close to each other, but if you go to the wrong one, you will miss your boat.
- 2. Fast versus slow: The fast hydrofoil takes about 50 minutes and only takes foot passengers. The slow ferry takes about 90 minutes, allows cars, and lets you sit outside to enjoy the sun.
- 3. The summer car ban: If you are not a resident of the Campania region of Italy, you cannot bring a car to Ischia during the busy summer months. You must park in Naples and walk on the boat.
- 4. Check your arrival town: Ischia has three main ports. Ischia Porto is the biggest, but boats also go to Casamicciola and Forio. Pick the port closest to your hotel to save money on expensive island taxis.
The fast catamarans and hydrofoils charge extra for large suitcases. You usually pay about โฌ2 per big bag at the ticket window. Do not try to hide a big bag, because the crew checks tags before you walk up the ramp.
“If you are prone to seasickness, take the slow Medmar or Caremar car ferry. The fast Alilauro boats skip over the waves and bounce a lot if the sea is rough, but the big ferries barely move at all.”
