Map of Ferries to Elba
Leave the busy Tuscan mainland behind on a fast 45-minute crossing from Piombino. Toremar and Moby Lines manage the vast majority of this traffic, operating dozens of daily vehicle ferries that drop you right into the harbor at Portoferraio. Check the ferry map above to see exactly how these active shipping lanes operate, including the longer summer runs heading further west to Corsica or south to Giglio. Drive your car onto the deck for this journey. The island is much larger than it looks, and having your own wheels is the only practical way to hit the secluded beaches along the western coast.

The Tuscan Jump: Getting to Elba Island
Getting to Elba is a fast trip from the Tuscan coast. The largest ferry operators in the region include Moby Lines, Toremar, Blu Navy, and Corsica Ferries. Because the ride is short, most people bring a car to easily explore the beaches.
- The Main Route: Almost all ferries leave from Piombino on the mainland and go straight to Portoferraio, the biggest town on Elba. This trip takes just 1 hour.
- Faster Alternatives: You can also take a ferry from Piombino to Cavo (30 minutes) or Rio Marina (45 minutes). These towns are on the eastern side of the island.
- Pricing (2026): Passenger tickets are cheap, usually โฌ15 to โฌ25. Bringing a standard car costs between โฌ40 and โฌ80 depending on the time of day.
- Campers and Vans: Elba is great for camping. If you bring a larger vehicle, read our camper on board tips so you know how to handle the loading ramps.
The boat to Cavo is the fastest way to reach the island. However, the road from Cavo to the rest of Elba is extremely curvy and slow. If you get carsick easily, or if your hotel is near Portoferraio, just take the 1 hour boat to Portoferraio. It saves a lot of driving stress!
“Book your car space early for July and August weekends. If you want to save money, Blu Navy often has the best basic car rates. But Moby and Toremar have the most sailings, which gives you more schedule options.”
