Ferries to Koh Samui
Koh Samui is the hub of the Gulf of Thailand ferry network, with several piers that each serve different boats. From Don Sak on the mainland, Raja Ferry and Seatran carry cars and passengers, Lomprayah sails from Surat Thani to Nathon and Maenam, and Songserm’s speedboats cross to Nathon. Towards Koh Phangan and Koh Tao you can choose between Lomprayah, Seatran Discovery and Songserm. Choose your pier with care: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Bangrak and Maenam are far apart, and the right one saves you a long taxi ride once you disembark.

Samui archipelago: Multi-pier entry guide
Ko Samui is the transit hub of the Gulf, processing over 2.5 million visitors. Unlike other islands, it has four major pier zones. Arriving at the wrong one can mean a long taxi ride.
| Pier Zone | Primary Operator | Logistics Score |
|---|---|---|
| Nathon Pier (West Coast) |
Lomprayah, Seatran Ferry, Songserm | The Commercial Hub: Main port for car ferries from the mainland (Donsak). Far from Chaweng (45 mins). Best for budget travelers. Songserm’s large ferry and speedboats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and its speedboat to Don Sak, leave from Nathon. |
| Bangrak / Big Buddha (North East) |
Seatran Discovery, Songserm, Haad Rin Queen | Airport Link: Closest pier to the airport (10 mins) and Chaweng. Ideal for hopping to Ko Phangan. Songserm’s speedboats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao leave from Petcherat Pier in the same bay. |
| Pralarn / Maenam (North Coast) |
Lomprayah (High Speed) | Speed Hub: The dedicated Lomprayah pier. High-speed catamarans to Tao and Chumphon depart here. efficient but isolated. |
Visitor Volume & Mode Comparison
- Air vs. Sea: Bangkok Airways owns the airport and keeps prices high. Ferries from Surat Thani (Donsak) are far cheaper, but slower, as you combine a bus and a boat.
- Volume: Ferries handle the heavy logistics (trucks/fuel), while the airport handles high-value tourists.
