Ferries from Ireland to Norway

There are currently no direct ferry connections from Ireland or the UK to Norway. However, many travellers turn this into a road trip, combining ferry crossings via mainland Europe to reach Norway with their own car, motorbike or campervan.

By planning the journey well, you can mix shorter crossings with overnight ferries and arrive in Norway with your own transport. In the sections below, we break this journey down into two steps.

From Ireland to Norway

To travel to Norway by ferry, you first take a crossing to either France or the UK. From there, you continue your journey across mainland Europe. Depending on your route, you can either take another ferry to the Netherlands or drive via Belgium towards Germany and Denmark.

Driving most of the way yourself and choosing shorter ferry crossings is usually the most affordable option, but it is less comfortable. If planned well, you can combine longer ferry routes with overnight sailings, effectively using the ferry as a hotel. Most of the longer crossings on the map are overnight ferries.

Crossing options explained

Ferry crossings to the UK are generally short and frequent. From there, you can either take a quick 1.5 to 2-hour crossing from Dover to France, or choose an overnight ferry from England to the Netherlands. These larger ferries offer cabins, restaurants, and onboard entertainment, making the journey more relaxed.

Once on the European mainland, you can continue driving or choose to board a ferry from Kiel to Oslo. This is one of the most comfortable ferry routes in Europe and feels closer to a mini cruise than a simple transfer.

An alternative is to drive north to Hirtshals in Denmark, where several shorter ferry crossings connect to Norway. This is often the most practical and commonly used route.

You can also drive all the way to Norway via Denmark and Sweden, crossing the ร˜resund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmรถ. Some travellers choose to shorten the journey by taking the ferry between Puttgarden and Rรธdby.

Future connection

There are plans for a new direct ferry route between Eemshaven in the Netherlands and Norway, expected to launch around 2027. This service is not yet bookable, but it is worth keeping an eye on if you are planning a future trip.
