Ferries from Ireland to the UK
The UK is easily accessible by ferry from Ireland, with frequent departures and multiple options from Dublin and Rosslare. Irish Ferries and Stena Line are the largest operators on the Irish Sea, transporting millions of passengers and vehicles each year. A look at the ferry map above shows how these fast crossings to Holyhead, Fishguard, and Pembroke are well aligned for those travelling onwards to England. Northern England and Scotland can be reached via Northern Ireland.
From Ireland to Wales and England
All ferry crossings from Ireland arrive in Wales, from where England is also easily accessible. Liverpool, for example, is less than a two-hour drive from Holyhead, while London is just over 4.5 hours from Pembroke. You can choose to travel with Irish Ferries, Stena Line, and P&O Ferries. Irish Ferries offers the fastest option with the Dublin Swift (when available), with a crossing time of approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.

From Northern Ireland to Scotland
The main ferry routes from Northern Ireland are Belfast–Cairnryan and Larne–Cairnryan. These routes are served by large passenger ferries with car decks, operating frequent crossings. In summer, you can also choose smaller, faster passenger ferries that connect towards the Scottish Inner Hebrides.

What are the ferry crossings like?
On board the ships, you’ll find shops, restaurants and bars. Still, it’s a good idea to bring some entertainment of your own. You can also upgrade your crossing to a lounge. During busy periods, this can add a bit more comfort, and it often includes complimentary drinks and snacks, although this varies by operator. The images above give an impression of the ships.
What else is useful to know?
- The Dublin–Liverpool ferry route has not operated since 2023.
- You can also travel via the Isle of Man.
- Although ferries from Larne and Belfast both sail to Cairnryan, they use different terminals: Stena Line arrives north of Cairnryan, while P&O Ferries arrives south of Cairnryan.
- Irish citizens do not need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for the UK, but a valid Irish passport or passport card is required.
