Reaching the world’s largest sand island in Queensland requires a barge crossing from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, operated by SeaLink or Fraser Island Ferries. These vessels are the lifeblood of the island, moving the 4WD vehicles needed to navigate the beach “highways” of North Australia. You must time your ferry arrival with the tides, as driving on the island is only possible during specific windows between the neighboring sand islands.

Accessing K’gari is unique because the ferry doesn’t just drop you at a terminal; it often drops you directly onto a beach highway where the tide is your schedule. There are two distinct entry points, and your choice dictates your entire driving strategy for the day.
