To reach Groote Eylandt, you take the passenger ferry operated by SeaLink. Much like their services to the Tiwi Islands, they are the largest operator connecting this remote part of the Northern Territory. You can board their vessel from Numbulwar on the mainland, or catch a short ride over from neighboring Bickerton Island. The boat brings you right into the Alyangula terminal.
Because the island is a protected Aboriginal reserve, securing a visitor permit from the Anindilyakwa Land Council is required before you travel. You will not find massive roll-on/roll-off car ferries here like the ones heading to Kangaroo Island. This SeaLink route is strictly for foot passengers, so bringing a 4WD or campervan means you have to arrange a separate heavy freight barge in advance.
The ferry usually sails directly on the outbound journey and returns via Bickerton Island. As a result, the duration of the outbound and return trips varies from about 2.5 to approximately 3 hours.

Accessing Groote Eylandt, Australia’s fourth-largest island, is a complex logistical challenge.
| Transport Mode | Operator | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Freight Barge | Sea Swift | Industrial Lifeline: Weekly service from Darwin. Not a passenger service. Essential for transporting personal 4WDs, which is the only way to have a vehicle on the island given the lack of car hire. |
| Inter-Island Shuttle | SeaLink NT | Regional Link: Small vessel connecting Groote Eylandt to Bickerton Island and Numbulwar. Primarily serves the local Aboriginal communities for medical and social transit. |
