The ferry to IJmuiden is sometimes also called the ferry to Amsterdam. IJmuiden is a seaside resort within the greater Amsterdam area. IJmuiden itself might not offer enough to warrant a 15 hour ferry ride, but Amsterdam is definitely worth it!
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, famous for its canals, museums, soft drugs, and liberal attitude. The city is very international, and a favourite place for young people in their 20s and 30s to live. Because of this consumer demographic, the hospitality industry is widely represented in the different neighbourhoods Centrum, Jordaan, de Pijp, Noord, Oost, Oud-Zuid and Oud-West. Each of these neighbourhoods has its own distinct character.
There is plenty to do in the city, but simply renting a bicycle and having a look around is an adventure in its own right. There are a number of lovely small towns around Amsterdam very much worth visiting, and cities such as Leiden, Utrecht, Delft, The Hague and Rotterdam can be reached by train within 45 minutes. The beach is close by! This makes Amsterdam a wonderful destination for your longer or shorter city trip.
Travelers from Scotland and the north of England who travel to the Netherlands by ferry often take the Newcastle-IJmuiden route. IJmuiden is a small coastal resort along the Amsterdam harbour bay. From here, is an easy 40 minute drive to Amsterdam. This route is very popular as a mini-cruise to Amsterdam and back.
