Take a ferry to the Canary Islands
Although most people will choose to go to the Canary Islands by plane, it is also possible to take a ferry! Boats depart from Huelva and Cadiz and visit all of the main islands upon arrival on the Canary Islands. The ferries sail at least once per week.
The duration of the crossing varies from 27,5 hours to 54,5 hours. This big time difference is due to various islands' stopovers and arrival options. We explain much more about this on our page purely dedicated to getting from Spain to the Canary Islands.

From the harbor of Los Cristianos, you can easily start your Island hopping experience and travel further on to multiple islands.

Ferry hopping possibilities and routes
If you want to visit two or three islands during your stay on the Canary Islands we listed three cool options for ferry hopping.
Fuerteventura / Lanzarote Island Hopping
Ferry Hopping Option #1: Either from Fuerteventura or Lanzarote, going from one island to the other (Playa Blanca – Corralejo connection) and when you arrive or come back to Corralejo go for a day trip to Lobos.
Tenerife, La Gomera, and La Palma Island Hopping
Ferry Hopping Option #2: The only round trip option, and probably the most effective way of Island Hopping on the Canary Islands. You start at Los Cristianos, you take the ferry to San Sebastian (stay there for at least three days, read the La Gomera guide why you should) and then go on for a day trip towards La Palma and go back to Los Cristianos / Tenerife.
Tenerife Island Hopping
Ferry Hopping Option #3: From Gran Canaria (Agaete) to Tenerife (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), stay at least three days on Tenerife and drive there from Los Cristianos for a Day Trip to La Gomera and back from Tenerife towards Las Palmas. Keep in mind that La Gomera is an island more suitable for multiple days, but that would make this trip quite long.

How to book ferry trips to the Canary Islands?

The fast vessels on the Canary Islands
For Ferrygogo.com we've written thousands of pages regarding ferries and connections, it's rare however to find this many – very fast – hyper-modern catamaran ferries on such a small group of islands. Especially if you book at Fred Olsen. (however, Armas also has a few fast ones)

The discontinued ferry from Madeira to the Canary Islands
These also used to be a connection from Madeira (Funchal) to the Canary Islands. However, due to political reasons and apparently due to monopolies[2]Ferry to Madeira: What happened to it? this simply is a route that won't materialize again soon.

Funchal-Las Palmas
At the moment there are no ferries on this route. The only option to travel from Madeira to the Canary Islands is either by plane or by hopping on a cruise that travels around the islands. However, those are very difficult to book. There used to be an operator in the past (ENM Ferries) but they are not active anymore.
Frequently asked questions Ferry Canary Islands
We listed three island hopping routes for the Canary Island on this page, the best one is the connection between Tenerife – La Gomera and La Palma. As this is the only round trip possible between three islands.
If you want to visit all Canary Islands you need to start at Lanzarote and slowly travel towards El Hierro. From there you can fly back to Lanzarote or other destinations.
If you want to complete it 100% don't forget the day trip from Fuerteventura to Lobos. And from Lanzarote to La Graciosa. You need at least 2 weeks of total time to visit all the islands, however, 3 weeks is much better, since this would take the ‘hurry and stress' away from the trip. Especially take your time in Los Cristianos to make all connections work in a really good way.
Important to know: You'll be spending at least 20 hours on ferries! And it will cost at least € 800,- by just the ferry costs.
On all Canary Island crossings, you can take your dog along. Be sure to inform about vaccination rules and rules aboard the ships.
